While it’s understood that taking sun safety precautions is important outside, few people realize they can sustain sun damage indoors, too.
The UVA Rays that pass through glass are more damaging in your office or home than the direct sunlight outside.
This is because your skin doesn’t have the normal protective benefit of Vitamin D production, AND the activation of your skin’s immune system caused by exposure to UVB Rays that don’t pass through glass.
In addition, the skin does not typically redden or burn while inside due to the glass blocking UVB Rays which is typically the first indicator to people they’re receiving too much sun exposure.
“To see the damage that untreated glass can do, take a close look at the furnishings in your home that are hit by direct sunlight,” says Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “If the sun has faded the color of your sofa, it can just as easily damage your skin when you sit there.”
At one time experts thought that only UVB was a concern, but more has been learned about the damage caused by UVA rays. Most of us are exposed to large amounts of UVA throughout our lifetime. UVA rays account for up to 95% of the UV Radiation reaching the earth’s surface. Even though they are less intense than UVB, UVA Rays are 30 to 50 times more prevalent.
UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB and has long been known to play a major role in skin aging and wrinkling. UVA penetrates clouds and glass. They’re present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours and throughout the year.
UVB Rays also trigger the production of Vitamin D, Vitamin D helps strengthen bones, muscles, and the body’s immune system, but they do not significantly penetrate glass.
